Encountering Others: A Trans Theology of Solidarity

Amid escalating anti-trans political and religious violence, many people are seeking deeper understanding of transgender lives and experiences in an effort to strengthen their advocacy and allyship. But this pursuit of understanding can inadvertently flatten the multi-dimensional complexity of trans life—reducing “transness” to something graspable or containable, while reinforcing perceived divides between transgender and cisgender people. In this program, trans community minister Seth Anderson-Matz (he/him) offers a theological framework for approaching trans solidarity as relational as opposed to conceptual, and illuminates the wisdom embodied in trans life to invite reflection on our own experiences of gender within systems of oppression and control.
