This past week, I took a little bit of time off from my job at UUFM for a professional development opportunity through my other job at CADA attending the 2026 MNCASA (Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault) Symposium on Real-World Healing that took place on May 6-7 in Walker, MN. There were many touching, inspiring, and thought-provoking moments hearing from other folks in the work of anti-violence advocacy. I heard about everything from personal pain and loss from advocates that influenced them to choose this path, to the collective trauma that Operation Metro Surge caused, some practical education on providing intentional, responsive care, as well as moments of personal connection and joy between the heavier topics.
I feel abundantly grateful for both of my occupations: how both the work of ministry and advocacy hold a sense of purpose and meaning for me, provide me with benefits and flexibility, and give me opportunities to build connections and community. Through the moments I found myself hold back tears this past week as I listened to other’s stories that included personal accounts of assault and murder, I also remembered the sense that those parts of our hearts that ache and crack are where the light is let in, guiding us to grow more tender and loving.
Thank you for being a part of a community whose intentions and efforts aim to hold that space, lighten the load of others, bring joy, and live into our values together. To echo the words of our former minister, Rev. Rita, you are worthy, welcome, loved, and needed.
(Pictured are the products that I made at the symposium, during our hands-on self-care time, crafting buttons and printing shirts together!)
