“Listening is about showing people they matter, and the way you show people they matter is by aiming your curiosity at them. Ask yourself, what kinds of people do I talk about but never with? Whoever is underrepresented in your life will be overrepresented in your imagination.” – Mónica Guzmán
In times as divided as these, it can feel uncomfortable, challenging, and even unsafe to build community with those who hold perspectives that seem to be opposed to ours and our values. It takes some intentional discernment to notice where our perception is distorted, and it is often tempting to simply slip into assumptions and choose disconnection. However, Parker Palmer shares that “…we might define true community as that place where the person you least want to live with lives.” In this service, we will explore what it means to arrive with humility, grow increasingly curious, and widen our circles of care, starting with spiritual and nervous system care.
