CFD Director’s Message 1.4.23

“…The soul is like a wild animal — tough, resilient, and yet shy. When we go crashing through the woods shouting for it to come out so we can help it, the soul will stay in hiding. But if we are willing to sit quietly and wait for a while, the soul may show itself.” – Parker Palmer

Instead of New Year’s resolutions, this week I am inspired by Rev. Rita to invite you to consider what might be beneficial to release or heal. Many internal experiences come to mind, such as holding judgements, succumbing to a negativity bias, and misusing the imagination through worry.

Our tale for all ages I plan to share this Sunday, Ruby Finds a Worry, written and illustrated by Tom Percival, reminds us that worrying can sometimes lead to even more worries, and even grow when we try ignoring them. One way we can release worries is by sharing what we are feeling whether that is one-on-one with a trustworthy individual, among a supportive group, or through creative acts, such as writing, singing, or artmaking.

For our first Sunday gathering of 2023, our young people will be invited to execute a fun, meditative, and liberating visual art piece that reflects on just that – releasing worry and recognizing what we can control.

This month’s schedule:

We plan to have programming available downstairs for all children and youth each Sunday. Nursery care will be available for the entire worship service. Children’s Chapel and Youth Group begin following the tale for all ages.

This Sunday, Deb and Macey are in Children’s Chapel, Keri and Korinne are in the Nursery, and our Youth Group facilitators are to be determined.

Youth Group will also plan to meet on Wednesday, January 18th at 6:30pm for sledding at Spring Lake Park (weather-permitting). Please RSVP here: https://uufm.breezechms.com/form/f32f6c
