Director of Lifespan Faith Formation 2.25.26

“The older I get the more I understand that laughter isn’t about pretending that things are fine. It’s about surviving the fact that they aren’t. It’s about staying human when life could easily harden you.” -Catherine O’Hara (actress best known for her roles in Home Alone, Beetlejuice, and Schitt’s Creek, who died recently)

As I am preparing for another monthly service, an endeavor that always feels like a motivating creative push for me, I am thinking of all of the ways we scatter our attention, especially given the world we live in, in which distraction, fear, and scarcity fuel the economy.

I am so grateful to surround myself with a community who understands the importance of countering that culture: people who reject business as usual but don’t forget how essential joy, creativity, presence, and spirituality are. We truly are interdependent and we rely, more than some of us realize, on the foundational sense that we all belong. It’s so easy to feel afraid, frustrated, and divided in these times. However, each time I return to church, to yoga, and to other intentional gatherings, I am reminded of how good people are when we decide to grow and change together, with values and covenant holding us all accountable.

When we remember that showing up authentically present is the way to allow the love at our center to flow through us and among us, what is heavy might feel just a little lighter. I pray that we continually show up and find those respite and reciprocal moments amongst one another.
