May’s Second Collection recipient is the Living Earth Center (LEC). Their “Give to Grow Mankato Campaign” just kicked off on Earth Day. The Living Earth Center is a vital part of the Mankato community’s efforts toward educating on environmental justice issues and fighting food insecurity in our area. In addition to the community gardens up on Good Counsel hill, the LEC manages the Blue Earth County Community Farm just down the road from the Fellowship. While there is some uncertainty about the future home of the community gardens with the sale of the Good Counsel property, the LEC will be able to continue the gardens on the hill through this summer and is in negotiations for a new site.
“Big picture uncertainties do not change the fact that people still need access to land to grow food, or that our Community Partners … are depending on us to grow fresh organic produce for the families they serve. We will continue to dig into these issues and provide a community space to grow food and connection.” – Laura Peterson, Executive Director LEC
LEC has also received a matching grant this year that will match the Give to Grow Mankato Campaign donations dollar for dollar, so our donations will make double the impact.
This Second Collection will run through May 29th.
Please make your check payable to UUFM with ‘Living Earth Center’ in the memo line. Donations can also be made online through the UUFM Giving page, please note it’s for the Second Collection: https://uumankato.com/your-dollars-make-a-difference/make-a-contribution/
The Education and Justice Coordinating Council thanks you for your donation and for supporting local causes throughout the year.
