“What should young people do with their lives today? Many things, obviously. But the most daring thing is to create stable communities in which the terrible disease of loneliness can be cured.” – Kurt Vonnegut
Throughout this winter, I have enjoyed many walks. Sometimes, I walk with friends. Most of the time, I walk by myself or with my family’s dog. However, in my North Mankato neighborhood, I almost always end up seeing familiar faces on the park loop I like to take. This past week, I did not go on any walks because of the cold temperatures and today, I find myself feeling less inspired. While I realize that there are a few factors playing into how I am feeling today, I know that the season we are in is playing a large part in it. There is something about that connection with the world outside and people that energizes me, even when all that is shared is a smile.
Even for the most introverted people, I believe that connecting is essential (this is coming from someone who considers themselves an introvert). It is important to understand that no matter where one falls on that (introvert, extrovert) spectrum, people need people. Some prefer more intimate and calm connections, while others would love to return to the energy of large gatherings. Not only do studies confirm the importance of connection for our mental health, I believe there are also benefits that are not easy to quantify or put into words. Connections remind us of our life’s purpose, joy, and meaning.
I hope that through these times, all of you are enjoying relationships that keep you feeling connected. If you are feeling disconnected from our community, please reach out to me. I would love to help get you in touch with other families and people that share common interests and values. May we remember that there are warmer, brighter times together to come!
Please know that I am just an email or a phone call away. While I am no longer holding virtual “office hours”, you can reach me on my personal phone at 507-995-7929 or by email at cfddirector@uumankato.org . If I do not answer, I encourage you to send a text or leave a voicemail. Currently, I am available for daytime meetings on Mondays, Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. I also do have availability most other weekday evenings. I will continue to do my best to serve as a resource to our community, through connecting you to one another and of course, directly. Being a light in the lives of others is as important as ever, and I hope you will stay connected.
