Back in some January of the past, I posted a cartoon on Facebook. In the first of two panels, one character describes a hope imagined—”I am expecting flowers this year.” The other character asks: “How do you know you will get them.” And in the second panel, “Because I am planting seeds.” I can’t find the cartoon, but the sentiment is more important to me than ever.
We need our imaginations to plant the seeds of hope in difficult times. And we need our imaginations to plot the actions that will lead to the fulfillment of our hopes. And, as importantly, we need our actions to make real the hope that is needed and desired. Imagination is a fuel, a seed, a dream nurtured into being so sufficiently that a process can be envisioned. From hope to wish to dream to doing and making it reality. May we use our imaginations in the service of creating good for ourselves, each other, and our world, as you remember, today and every day, that you are loved, you are worthy, you are welcome, and you are needed. May you feel it so, and may it be so.
