In Robin Wall Kimmerer’s short read, The Serviceberry, she writes:
“I suppose in an industrial economy “production” is the source of the flow, rooted in human labor and the conversion of earthly gifts to commodities. But so often that production is at the cost of great destruction. When an economic system actively destroys what we love, isn’t it time for a different system?”
This book, along with Joanna Macy’s Concept of The Great Turning, and Brian Stout’s reflection on “Money, the Gift Economy, and Belonging” are a few sources that serve as the inspiration for this service. It is becoming increasingly apparent that the exponential growth that capitalism requires of us will not sustain us. In a time of environmental collapse, how might we reimagine what is worth striving for, radically care for one another, and authentically cultivate gratitude, as we grow and move forward together?
