Vietnamese Buddhist monk and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh calls us to important and perhaps uncomfortable insight: “When you look deeply into your anger, you will see that the person you call your enemy is also suffering. As soon as you see that, the capacity of accepting and having compassion for them is there.” Today we celebrate the International Day of Peace, observed around the world each year on September 21st. Established in 1981 by unanimous United Nations resolution, Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to Peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace. As we bless our children’s backpacks, we will call them and ourselves to resist bullying in school, in our community, in our country, and across the world as we seek compassion for ourselves and others.
