UUtheVote Committee Postcard Project Update
Our Fellowship’s UUtheVote Committee thanks everyone who has volunteered to write postcards with nonpartisan voter information to communities of color in voter suppression states. Twenty-seven UUFM households are currently writing and mailing a total of 627 cards.
Volunteers have received postcards and materials to send to voters in either Texas or Georgia. Each state has a different script appropriate to the situation in that state. Volunteers have either the Texas script or the Georgia script, but not both at the same time.
If you have the Texas script, please be sure that your postcards are in the mail no later than Tuesday, September 22.
If you have the Georgia script, please be sure that your postcards are in the mail no later than Wednesday, September 30.
Background: The purpose of this project is to help resist the voter suppression facing communities of color in voter suppression states. This action is an initiative of the Minnesota Unitarian Universalist Social Justice Alliance (MUUSJA) in partnership with The Center for Common Ground’s Reclaim Our Vote campaign. Eligible voters of color are being purged from voter rolls at a much higher rate than white voters. In voter suppression states, purging the voter rolls comes atop the implementation of strict new voter ID laws, a reduction in polling places and/or early voting days, and other tactics, that have already created substantial obstacles to voting in communities of color.
The Reclaim the Vote campaign has a proven record of making a difference. In 2019, roughly 1 in 4 of its postcards into nine counties in North Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District resulted in a voter registration. So far, Minnesota Unitarian Universalists have sent more than 12,000 postcards in this campaign.
Volunteers, when you have mailed your postcards, please send an announcement of that great news to seaneaston77@gmail.com or the UUtheVote committee member with whom you are in contact.
