Honoring Intersex Awareness Day
From Our Partners at “Uplift: Uplifting the LGBTQ+ Experience within Unitarian Universalism and Beyond”:
An Intersex Awareness Day Blessing
May you know your body as home.
Each curve, each angle,
each organ, each chromosome.
Know that no one can tell you who you are;
no doctors, no paperwork,
no state-issued identification.
Their limited constructs are not you.
The Universe has made you perfectly.
If your wholeness challenges others,
let them grow and evolve
to receive your truth.
Your body is its own wisdom,
whole and holy, blessed and beautiful.
Blessed be.
October 26th is Intersex Awareness Day, 2021 marks the 25th anniversary of a public demonstration by intersex people and their allies at the annual conference of the American Academy of Pediatrics on October 26th, 1996, at which they condemned nonconsensual surgeries on intersex people. We uplift the work of these activists, and we side with continued efforts to raise awareness and agency for all intersex people.
As Unitarian Universalists, we decry any medical practice that performs unwanted and unnecessary procedures on intersex children and adults. We believe that the body is sacred, and bodily autonomy is a human right. We will continue to work until everyone has access to this right. May all of our intersex siblings feel supported, empowered, and cherished.
