“Power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love.” – Martin Luther King Jr.

As we look forward to Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the service that Rev. Diana is preparing to accompany it, I wonder in what ways that people will honor such a legacy. Coretta Scott King once said, “The greatest birthday gift my husband could receive is if people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds celebrated the holiday by performing individual acts of kindness through service to others.” May we be encouraged and reminded that kindness and care to others, no matter how big the deed or small a gesture it may seem, do indeed, matter and are worth doing.

Some recent acts of care and affection that stuck out to me include: the gifts I have recently received (especially handwritten notes and both homemade and secondhand treasures), the person who insisted I go in front of them in a line we entered at the same time, my husband waking up early to prepare coffee, and the way my child rests his hand on me (pictured below). It really is the small acts of kindness often that keep me feeling connected.

This weekend, I am looking forward to spending time with my toddler and potentially going to visit a friend, while Deb and Danielle hold Children’s Chapel and Linden and DeeAnn are present to care for the youngest visitors. I am grateful for the flexibility of having a regular Sunday off each month.

In addition to this month’s regular Sunday programming, consisting of Children’s Chapel and Nursery Care, below is our January schedule. If you or your family members plan to attend, it is helpful to receive RSVPs to get a sense of who we might anticipate welcoming:
