“Pluralism isn’t easy. It’s a constant willingness to self-challenge and to look at where we might be wrong, or limited; even with regard to pluralism itself. It requires a capacity to detach ourselves from our agendas, our beliefs, our commitments, and to recognize that there may be other ways. And it also requires us to recognize that we can never wholly achieve that.” – Mick Cooper
The humility that pluralism invites of us allows us to stand firmly in our essential, core beliefs while practicing curiosity about other perspectives, familiarizing with our own blind spots, getting comfortable with vulnerability, and realizing we have room to grow.
A good way to speak with people of all ages, I’ve found, is with the simple statement: multiple things can be true.
May the month of Pluralism and beyond be rich with lessons of what it means to truly nourish a diverse community.
