Happy April, the month of Joy!

“Happiness is attached to things being a certain way. But joy is about the bliss of being. It transcends highs and lows.” – Martha Beck

With yesterday being the first day of April, I read a post that mentioned it is believed April Fools’ Day began in 16th-century France, when the calendar shifted from the Julian to the Gregorian system, and those who kept celebrating the New Year this time of year were mocked as fools.

I’ve heard of other traditions celebrating the new year this time of year, too, and honestly, I would say spring energy feels more suitable to me as a celebration of the new year, too. I’ve always appreciated the refreshing experience that comes with pattering rain, thawing grounds, and the effortless revival of perennial plants. Just as much as a I loved puddle jumping as a kid, I find the presence and joy of time outdoors with my toddler to be exactly what I need this time of year. In my opinion, honoring this intuitive sense of where the new year begins doesn’t seem foolish at all. In fact, I sense it as wisdom.

In spite of the collective chaos and personal challenges that may be appearing to you, I hope you, too, will experience restorative moments of joy this spring. May your joy, too, transcend the overarching highs and lows.
