January 18, 2023 Minister’s Message

Dear Friends,

I am intrigued by the interplay of two quotations from our monthly Soul Matters packet on “Finding Our Center. On the one hand, according to Lao Tzu, At the center of your being, you have the answer; you know who you are, and you know what you want.” On the other, according to Christopher L. Heuertz, “We all find ourselves bouncing around three very human lies that we believe about our identity: I am what I have, I am what I do, and I am what other people say or think about me.” Who we are we find within us. Who we are we find outside of ourselves.

But according to Niels Bohr, “The opposite of a correct statement is a false statement. But the opposite of a profound truth may well be another profound truth.” In other words, who we are is found both inside and outside us. I suppose it is the relationship between these that matter most, for each of us. Who do you feel yourself most to be, and from where does that self-knowing come? And are you at peace with who you are.

I reflect with you on these profound questions, so remember, today and every day, you are loved, you are worthy, you are welcome, and you are needed. May your feel it so, and may it be so.

Blessings and warm wishes, Rev. Rita
