Images of the Sacred: Cultural Symbols, Evolution and Diffusion

Sacred Image

People around the world throughout time have socially created what they identified as sacred.  They did so to explain the unknown and unknowable, to honor their ancestors and to reach out to reflect on or connect with the universal energy beyond their daily realities.  This reproduction of a Neolithic goddess figurine was the beginning of Barbara’s collection of images of the sacred from different cultures.  A power point slide show of these images with brief explanations of their cultural meanings will serve as our sermon.

Come early (or not) at your convenience to see our Prelude, the first half-hour of Baraka, a video presenting sacred and secular images and activities from 24 countries on six continents 10 – 10:30 AM.  “Baraka” can be translated as a blessing or breath of life or essence of life.  The images and music (with no script or words) address some sociological questions: What does it mean to be human? How do societies and cultures evolve? Are human beings free?  Why are people unequal? Why is there misery in the world?  What is role of religion, religious symbols and religious practices in society?
