Migration Stories

“Exile calls us to soften our hard defenses, to acknowledge that we don’t have all the answers, to seek the resources available in our new communities and reach out to strangers for support.”—Christine Valters Paintner

Since the emergence of our ancestors in some part of Africa perhaps as long ago as 300,000 years, we as a species have been journeying across the landscapes of the earth. We traverse plains and deserts, mountains and forests, oceans and land bridges, borders and red tape. We have journeyed on foot, on backs, on animals, by trains and automobiles, in boats and airplanes. And still we are moving around the lands, though not all migration is equal. For what reasons do we humans move about so, and what does it all mean?
